u07a2 Project 3: Digital Board

The last two minds that Howard Gardner refers to in his book 5 Minds of the Future are the respectful and ethical minds.  I created an educational  board on the Discovery Education website that will help my first grade students start to develop these two minds through a history lesson of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks.  To visit the board please click here.  The purpose of this board is to show my students the importance of respecting all people no matter the color of their skin.  In doing so, it helps in the beginning development of a respectful mind.  By watching the videos on the board, my students will see that just because there is a law stating something to be true it does not mean that it is ethical.  Through the lesson, the students will see that they need to decide for themselves what is right or wrong, not just trust others to tell us.  Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were willing to fight for what they knew was right even though it was opposite of what the law said.  As a result of their diligence, persistence and hard work, laws were changed and the minds of many Americans began to be transformed.  Students need to learn that they can make a difference when they are confronted with an ethical dilemma.  They need to understand that by standing up for what is right, even when it is hard, they have the opportunity to change the minds of others for the better.  People are very easily swayed by the opinion of others.  Students need to learn to stay strong and stand for what they believe to be right even when the majority does not.  Through this educational board, I believe that my first graders, even though they are young, can begin to learn these very important lessons and in turn start to develop their respectful and ethical minds.

Welcome to my blog! I am a passionate educator who loves teaching children the joy of learning. While working toward my degree in education, I worked as a preschool teacher, where I learned the importance of patience and caring when teaching children. Once I graduated with a degree in special ed, I then continued my career in education working as a 1st grade teacher for 12 years. Most recently I returned to the early childhood education realm, as director of a preschool and infant center. Now, my journey has led me back to the first grade classroom. In preparation, I am working on receiving my master's degree in education.
