apple-star 3

Writing Prompt

In first grade we do a unit on apples for the first month of school.  To start the lesson that teaches the kids about the star found in apples I show this picture to my students and ask them to think about they think the picture is and where in nature they would find it.  After giving them a minute to think, I then have them write there hypothesis in their journals.  After they’ve written their guesses I then show them a paper bag containing a mystery item.  I ask them to guess what might be in the bag.  They whisper their guess to their table partner.  I then read the story called The Little Red House With No Doors and No Windows With a Star InsideWhen I get to the end of the story I pull the apple out of the bag.  I show them that the apple is red, has no doors and no windows.  I then cut into the apple and then show the kids the star inside the apple.  The students then go back to their journal and write what the picture is and where it is found in nature.  They write whether their hypothesis was correct or not.  They then get to make a print of the apple’s star in their journal.  They dip the apple star into paint and then press the painted side of the apple onto the page of their journal.

Welcome to my blog! I am a passionate educator who loves teaching children the joy of learning. While working toward my degree in education, I worked as a preschool teacher, where I learned the importance of patience and caring when teaching children. Once I graduated with a degree in special ed, I then continued my career in education working as a 1st grade teacher for 12 years. Most recently I returned to the early childhood education realm, as director of a preschool and infant center. Now, my journey has led me back to the first grade classroom. In preparation, I am working on receiving my master's degree in education.
